Walt Whitman Signed 1876 Author's Edition of "Leaves of Grass", 1 of 600 Copies
Signed Book
A 1876 "Author's Edition" copy of "Leaves of Grass" signed by Walt Whitman. Camden: Author's Edition, 1876. Twelvemo, 384pp, with two unnumbered leaves of plates. With small tipped-in sheet in back advertising "Leaves of Grass" and "Two Rivulets". Signed by Whitman on the title page, "Walt Whitman." The author's edition was published by Whitman himself as a "centennial edition," one on only 600 copies printed, and constituted the fifth edition, third printing, second issue of "Leaves of Grass." Publisher's three-quarter tan morocco over green marbled paper-covered boards, brown morocco spine label, stamped in blind and in gilt. The volume has been re-backed with the original spine laid down. With rubbing, scratching, and soiling to the boards and edges. Cracked spine with some tears to the first few pages near the spine. Light toning to internal pages. Minor dampstaining near the spine at the lower page edges. Boldly signed by Whitman.

"Leaves of Grass" was a collection of poetry first published by Walt Whitman in 1855. However, Whitman spent a large part of his writing career editing and expanding the collection, with a total of 6-9 different editions produced by the time of his death (depending on how the editions are distinguished). The first publication included a total of 12 poems, while the final edition totaled over 400. The 1876, or Centennial, edition of "Leaves of Grass" is technically not a new edition, because it was printed from the 1871 plates, but Whitman made a number of innovations in this printing through alterations in the title page and intercalations in the text. For example, he mixed different type sizes and typefaces for the two "S"s in the word "GRASS" on a title page.
