Description:

Disney Walt

Walt Disney Signed Mickey Mouse as Argentine Gaucho Image, Ca. 1940

This image depicting Walt Disney's beloved cartoon character Mickey Mouse as an Argentine Gaucho was created to commemorate Disney Studio's 1940 Goodwill Tour of Latin America. Originally created by American animation artist Walt Disney (1901-1966) in the late 1920s, Mickey Mouse went through several iterations; here, the Mouse appears in full vaquero regalia, including flat-topped sombrero, white cowboy boots, red fringed sash, and lasso.

The original mat surrounding the image is signed by Walt Disney in green colored pencil as "Walt Disney" with his big and looping cursive signature appearing just outside the mat opening at lower right. The name of the feature film, "From 'Mickey Mouse'" is inscribed just outside the mat opening at lower left. This inscription, along with the construction paper mat backing, are two hallmarks of Guthrie Courvoisier's studio. The image is near fine, with adhesive residue corresponding to the cardboard backing verso, and measures 11.125" x 8.875". The mat shows light overall toning, and some abrasions and label residue in the lower left corner, else very good to near fine. A sheet of transparent plastic is hinged with old tape to the top to protect the image. The signature remains strong and vibrant. The mat measures 15.875" x 15" overall.

This lot combines several desirable features that make it a must-have for Disney collectors: it features the premier Disney character, the famous Mouse, and sports the unmistakable Disney signature!
