Walt Disney Signed 1st Ed. of "Fantasia", JSA Authenticated
Signed book

A desirable, first edition copy of Walt Disney's "Fantasia" (New York: Simon and Schuster, 1940), published in tandem with the animated film's release. Quatro, 9.75" x 13". 158pp. Boldly signed and inscribed on the front title page in blue fountain pen: "Walt Disney/ B.A. 1941". The volume is lavishly illustrated throughout, featuring 16 mounted color plates, and is complete with its original dust jacket. Exhibits moderate soiling to front boards and spine, with evident fabric tearing at corners and upper left hinge. Expected age toning within and scattered foxing to some pages. Isolated areas of exposed interior binding. Dust jacket features expected clipping and heavy restoration to interior. Scattered surface imperfections and paper loss throughout. Please refer to images for further information. Overall, good condition with rare survival of a near complete dust jacket! Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from JSA.

The film Fantasia consists of eight animated segments set to pieces of classical music conducted by Leopold Stokowski, including "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" by Paul Dukas and Beethoven's "Pastoral Symphony". Although Disney had first explored the concept of matching animation to classical music with his early Silly Symphony cartoons, he wanted to go beyond the usual slapstick in those shorts and produce stories of epic fantasy. Upon its release, Fantasia was acclaimed by critics but failed to make a profit due to high production costs and distribution challenges in wartime Europe. It has since grown in reputation over the years, and is now widely thought of as one of the best animated movies of all time.
