Disney Walt

Walt Disney, monumental extra-large photo showing Fantasia collaborators

Monumental black and white print enlarged from a photo negative showing producer Walt Disney, conductor Leopold Stokowski, and composer Deems Taylor working on the production of Fantasia (1940). In very good condition with expected wear. Water stained in upper right corner and some chipped edges. Probably trimmed at right. Measures approximately 37" x 40.5" unrolled.

Walt Disney (1901-1966), in tan slacks and hounds tooth blazer, is shown standing in a studio to the left of a Capehart Deluxe phonograph. His two Fantasia collaborators, British conductor Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977) and American composer Deems Taylor (1885-1966) are shown at right, the former with unkempt white hair and the latter wearing glasses. The men appear to be listening to musical selections while considering stills from the motion picture; Mickey in a magician's cap is clearly visible, as is the dragon. A placard inscribed "Troika end trailhead" appears on the wall behind Disney. The enormous print still shows the photo identification numbers at left and at bottom. A similar photo of the three collaborators can be found attached.

Fantasia, the third feature-length animated film produced by Walt Disney Productions, came out in 1940. It was meant as a Mickey Mouse vehicle, and indeed, the loveable rodent has ample screen time as the Sorcerer's Apprentice. Its 8 cartoon and live action segments were accompanied to music by Bach, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Schubert, and Stravinsky conducted by Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Deems Taylor acted as Master of Ceremonies throughout the psychedelic journey through time and space.

Walt Disney was a talented animator and voice actor who co-created the character of Mickey Mouse in 1928. His entrepreneurial spirit later led him into full-length sound-synchronized animated films, amusement parks, and consumer goods.
