Signed photograph

Cunningham writes: "For our launches, we had many people in important positions. Wernher von Braun, one of Nasa's best managers, may have been unique on launches. Wernher, relative to the position he had and what he had to do, I think was the 'best of the bunch' Walt Cunningham Apollo 7."

Ronnie Walter Cunningham (1932-2023) was an American astronaut who, in 1968, was a lunar module pilot on the Apollo 7 mission. He was NASA's third civilian astronaut after Neil Armstrong and Elliot See. Cunningham was the last surviving crew member of Apollo 7, passing away on January 3, 2023.

Wernher von Braun (1912-1977) was a German-American aerospace engineer and space architect. As a young man, von Braun worked in Nazi Germany's rocket development program, helping to design and co-develop the V-2 rocket during World War II. Following the war, he was secretly moved to the United States along with 1,600 other German scientists, engineers, and technicians. By 1960, his group had assimilated into NASA, where he served as director of the newly formed Marshall Space Flight Center. In this position, von Braun would serve as a chief architect of the Saturn V super heavy-lift launch vehicle that propelled the Apollo spacecraft to the Moon.
