Description:

Wallace Stegner Two TLS Providing A Review for A Fellow Author

A pair of typed letters signed by Wallace Stegner, accompanied by their typed responses. Each of Stegner's letters, typed on Stanford University letterhead, measures 5.5" x 8.5". Both are signed "Wallace Stegner" and are addressed to Ray Roberts, Assistant Editor at the Henry Regnery Company, Publishers. The first, dated March 22, 1964, concerns a request to write a blurb for Perrin Lowrey. The second, dated April 4, 1964, goes into further detail about Lowrey's stories and their representation of realistic Southern life. The two accompanying typed letters from Roberts (each stapled to the corresponding Stegner letter) measure 8.5" x 11" and are dated March 24, 1964 and April 6, 1964 respectively. With varying degrees of toning, soiling, creasing, and chipping. Boldly signed by Stegner.

Excerpts include:

March 22, 1964: "…I just got your note asking about a blurb for Perrin Lowrey. I'm very glad to write him some sort of recommend, but I very must doubt that you could get the stories to me, I could read them, and write you a letter about them, all before April 6. I'm willing to try, but I hate to promise…"

April 4, 1964: "…One noticeable thing about these stories is the absence in them of Southern gothic and Southern grotesque. These are people, towns, and country one might have known. The stories themselves do not deal with acute Southern problems, but with a re-created and perhaps passing way of life…Mr. Lowrey knows these people inside out, his ear for talk is sharp, his way with a story is deft and inventive. But what I most like is the spirit in which he approaches his people. Even when they are ridiculous, he doesn't laugh…Instead, they come to us warmed by Mr. Lowrey's sympathy. This is a writer who is notably honest in his feelings, and who -- it isn't too common -- has humane feelings to be honest about."

Wallace E. Stegner (1909-1993) was an American novelist, short story writer, environmentalist, and historian, often called "The Dean of Western Writers". He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 and the U.S. National Book Award in 1977.
