W.S. Rosecrans ALS to Phil Sheridan: "what is the general character of Capt Rose"
ALS

William S. Rosecrans (1819-1898). Autograph letter signed, "W. S. Rosecrans / Maj Genl," 1p, on ruled paper measuring 8" x 5.25", Murfreesboro, Tennessee, May 12, 1863. Docketed at verso. Flattened folds and light creases, with some minor separation at right and left edges. Staining along left edge, not affecting text. In very good condition.

Provenance: From the collection of Larry Berra, son of baseball legend Yogi Berra.

Rosecrans pens a brief "unofficial" letter to General Philip H. Sheridan requesting information on the character of one Captain Rose, reading:

"Genl Sheridan / Please let me know what is the general character of Capt Rose for efficiency, habits and general capacity."

The "Capt Rose" mentioned here is likely Thomas E. Rose (1830-1907). When the American Civil War broke out, Rose enlisted into the 12th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment as a private. He was then offered a commission to command the company as its captain and he agreed, becoming so on October 28, 1861. Rose first saw active combat at the Battle of Stones River and lead the 77th Pennsylvania through the battle. For his service in the battle, Rose was promoted to Colonel on February 1, 1863. He then participated in the Battle of Liberty Gap and was praised for his service during that battle. Captured at the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863, Rose was sent to Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. Best known as the mastermind behind the daring February 1864 prison escape, Rose's 17-day tunnel operation lead 109 Union officers to freedom.
