Description:

William Henry Harrison Signed War of 1812-Dated Check, Among Finest Known!

A check engrossed by War of 1812 hero and future 9th U.S. President William Henry Harrison (1773-1841), and 2x signed by him, once along the signature line as "Willm Henry Harrison" and once along the payee line as "Mr Harrison." The check in the amount of $20 was issued by the Cashier of the Miami Exporting Company (Cincinnati, Ohio) on June 1, 1813. Pre-printed text and check decoration. Bearing typical "x" shaped cancellation marks. A few light stains found on the left edge, else near fine. 6" x 2.5." Accompanied by a handsome portrait of Harrison complete with his facsimile signature and printed on gilt-edged stock card, measuring 5" x 7."

Harrison signed this check four months before achieving a major American victory at the Battle of the Thames on October 5, 1813. Fresh from his governorship of the Indiana Territory (1801-1812), Harrison had assumed command of the Army of the Northwest in September 1812. His record as a military commander was impressive; Harrison's army recaptured Detroit, defeated enemy forces in Indiana Territory and Ohio, and invaded Ontario. The defeat of the British and their Indian allies at the Battle of the Thames proved a turning point in the war. Harrison's old nemesis Tecumseh was killed at the battle, weakening the confederacy he had organized, and the British lost territory in southwestern Ontario.
