"9th Dec. 1928

Dear Madame [handwritten] M. Chaumeix,

Thank you so much for your letter. I heard from Miss Halford and told her that I should be ready to give the French rights of my articles from time to time to the Figaro on the terms that you suggest.

I am afraid that I cannot write one in December, but probably I could send you one in January. It would be from 1500 to 2,000 words and it would appear in England and in America at the same time. Would it be time [sic] if I sent the manuscript to the Figaro about a fortnight before publication?

With many thanks,

believe me

yours sincerely

[signed] Virginia Woolf."

Woolf contributed a number of articles to Le Figaro from 1929-1931, beginning with "Quand on ne sait pas le français" [trans: On not knowing French], which appeared on February 10, 1929. Woolf's correspondent André Chaumiex (1874-1955) was a French journalist and member of the Académie Française. He served as editor-in-chief of Le Figaro, a Parisian daily, between 1926-1930.
