Typed Letter Signed "Edith Bolling Wilson" as First Lady, 1 page, 5" x 8". On White House stationery, headed with green embossed presidential seal and "The White House / Washington," November 20, 1920. To Miss Jessica Smith, Bureau of Supplies and Accounts, Navy Department. Fine condition.

In full, "It was very gratifying to the President to receive such generous appreciation as the United Daughters of the Confederacy have expressed for the wreath which he has had placed on the Confederate Monument at Arlington. It is stirring to read such expressions of loyalty and faith in him and his ideals, and he wishes me to join his thanks with mine for your courtesy in sending him the copy of your motion. I shall be very glad if you will kindly send me the minutes of the meeting when they are published."

Others claimed they designed the Confederate flag. The June 3, 1915, issue of the Richmond Times-Dispatch headlined "Flag Award is made to Major Orrin R. Smith / North Carolinian Who Recently Died / Declared to Have Designed / Stars and Bars. / Daughter Wins Her Fight / For Years Miss Jessica Smith Has / Contested for This Recognition for / Her Father - Committee Makes / Exhaustive Study." In part, "To the late Major Orron Randolph Smith, of Louisburg, N.C., was yesterday awarded the credit for having designed the first flag of the Confederate States of America - the 'Stars and Bars.' … The Committee was assisted in gathering evidence by committees of the Daughters of the Confederacy, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the Confederated Southern Memorial Association…"
