Leonard Woolf (1880-1969) and Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) had established The Hogarth Press in 1917 in order to explore hand-press printing methods. Over the next few decades, until The Hogarth Press merged with Chatto & Windus in 1946, the company published works by many of their Bloomsbury Group intimates. The select group of writers featured in "The Hogarth Letters"--including Virginia Woolf, Rebecca West, and E.M. Forster--were tasked with writing letters to either actual people or fictional characters. The series did not enjoy much commercial success but provides a fascinating view of 1930s European cultural, intellectual, and political life.
