Description:

Vinton Cerf AES Identifying Significant Moments In Internet History

A writer's prompt posing a series of questions to Vinton Cerf (born 1943), one of the so-called "fathers of the internet." Cerf has responded to the questions in a 28-word handwritten response signed at the conclusion as "Vint Cerf" appearing above his printed name as "Mr. Vinton Cerf." The printed worksheet has a few gentle wrinkles in the lower left corner, else near fine. 8.5" x 11."

When asked the questions, "As you were creating & developing the Internet; What was the 'key' piece to the puzzle? What was the defining moment?", Vinton Cerf inscribed and signed the following response: "The basic design of TCP and the encapsulating gateway concept. The End-to-End principle. The Nov 22, 1977 demonstration of the interconnection of ARPANET, PRNET and Packet Satellite net. Vint Cerf."

The TCP, or Transmission Control Protocol, was a framework for organizing four layers of communication protocols, and standardizing the process of data transmission. The end-to-end principle ensured the reliable, secure, and accurate transference of data. ARPANET, or Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, was the first far-ranging communication network following such protocols developed in the 1960s. PRNET, an acronym for Packet Radio Network, was one of the earliest wireless networks. The Atlantic Packet Satellite Network, or SATNET, was the initial segment of the circuit which would later become the internet, which by definition, was the joining of different networks. The November 22, 1977 demonstration identified by Cerf was indeed a pivotal moment in internet history, when data was transferred across three different networks between the United States, England, Norway, and Sweden.
