Vintage Real Photo Postcard of Charlie Pitts Deceased After the Northfield Raid, From the archives of famous Old West photographer John Tackett.

This Photo, 5.5" x 3.5", bearing a photograph of a deceased Charlie Pitts after being shot and killed in Hanska Slough by a posse in a shoot-out after the Northfield raid. From the archives of famous Old West photographer John Tackett.

From the first half of the 20th century.

On September 7, 1876, the James-Younger Gang attempted to rob the First National Bank of Northfield, Minnesota with outlaws including the James Brothers, the three Younger Brothers, Clell Miller and Charlie Pitts. The attempted robbery would lead to the demise of the infamous James-Younger Gang.

The bank in Northfield held the wealth of one of the most hated men in the South, Union Gen. Benjamin Butler, renowned for filching Confederate silver and his son-in-law Adelbert Ames, a Union commander who had just been impeached as governor of Mississippi during the war.

A former Union sharpshooter and an expert hunter were standing near the bank as the raid took place, and within a few minutes, outlaws Clell Miller and William Stiles were dead. Bob Younger, Cole Younger and Charlie Pitts were wounded, but were able to flee. After two weeks, they still were in western Minnesota where they stopped at a farm to buy food, but were immediately recognized by the farmer's teen-age son.

The boy rode to Madelia and alerted the townsfolk, who organized a posse and cornered the men in a slough of the Watonwan River. A shootout ensued, which would leave Charlie Pitts dead after being shot 5 times.

John Tackett owned a photography studio in Coffeyville, where Tackett would capture many famous images.
