Victor Emmanuel III of Italy King

Victor Emmanuel III Signed Citizenship Document

2pp partly printed and partly handwritten document in Italian signed by King of Italy Victor Emmanuel III (1869-1947) as "Vittorio Emanuele" at bottom of second page. The bold and dark signature measures 6.75" x 1.25".  Also co-signed by his Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Giovanni Giolitti (1842-1928) as "Giolitti." Stamped, numbered, and docketed. The bifold watermarked cream paper has isolated foxing along the top and bottom edges, and a large diagonal fold running across the upper right corner of the first page, else near fine. The last two pages are blank. Each page measures 9.75" x 15".

In Rome on July 2, 1911, King of Italy Victor Emmanuel III granted Italian citizenship to a 44-year-old man of Belgian heritage.

In part:

"Victor Emmanuel III, by the grace of God and the will of the nation King of Italy

In view of the request to obtain Italian citizenship including the acquisition and exercise of political rights presented by Mr. De Witten Stanislav, Maria, Giuseppe, Giovanni, Berchmans, Luigi, Francesco, Laverio born in Rome on 3 January 1867 to Ignazio and Clelia Macchi, Belgian subjects, residing in Rome;

We have decreed and decree:

The aforementioned Mr. De Witten Stanislav, Maria, Giuseppe, Giovanni, Berchmans, Luigi, Francesco, Laverio is granted Italian citizenship, including the acquisition and exercise of political rights, under the observance of the conditions and formalities established by Article 10 of the Civil Code. This concession is subject to the payment of the tax established in No. 1 of the table annexed to the law of September 13, 1874…"

Victor Emmanuel III officially ruled as King of Italy between 1900-1946, although he essentially served as a puppet king to Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini between 1925-1943. Victor Emmanuel III also claimed sovereignty over Albania and Ethiopia during World War II. Today, Victor Emmanuel is criticized for accommodating Mussolini and the rise of the Fascists in Italy. Yet the king's ability to withstand so many tumultuous political changes during his reign certainly demonstrates his shrewdness and tenacity.

Giovanni Giolitti was the second-longest serving Prime Minister in Italian history, serving five terms in that office between 1892-1921.
