Julian (1870-1949) and 52nd U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr. (1891-1967). In near fine condition with expected creases and tiny lower right corner fold. Colors are fresh and dark. Franklin's signature is dramatic, with the cross bar of the "Roosevelt" "t" continuing across almost the entire width of George Washington's forehead in the center medallion. Slight smudge on the "lin" of "Franklin". Measures 6.125" x 2.625". Franklin D. Roosevelt signatures executed while he was President are very scarce even though Roosevelt served twelve years in office.

The United States was in the throes of the Depression around the time FDR signed this dollar bill in 1935. During his first presidential term, Roosevelt focused on offering immediate financial relief. Later, he resuscitated the U.S. economy through federal work programs and war production. The Depression was caused in part by the widespread failure of U.S. banks. Roosevelt was personally endorsing America's new financial system by signing a piece of its rehabilitated currency. The signed dollar bill also served as a symbol of the President's commitment to economic recovery, which he achieved mostly through federal spending.
