Description:

A sharp and crisp period photograph of Frederick Douglass

Carte-de-visite photograph, 2.5" x 4", c. 1879, bearing a bust portrait of Douglass by George K. Warren of Boston with photographer's credit on bottom margin and verso. A superb and very clean example, very fine condition.

Frederick Douglass was the most photographed American during the 19th century: at least 160 distinct images are known to exist. The first image, a daguerreotype, was taken in 1841 and his final photograph was taken on his deathbed, in 1895. Douglass was very conscious of his image and used it to promote a serious depiction of the black man, who was often pictured in a submissive pose, wearing but little clothing. In contrast, Douglass preferred minimal adornment_eschewing elaborate backdrops and always presenting a strong, determined face, and never smiling. According to a prominent researcher on Douglass' image, "It became one of his most powerful arguments against slavery and for full and equal citizenship. Douglass is shattering expectations in his photographs. He's transforming the African American body into an emblem of heroism and pushing the boundaries of possibility for black masculinity." (Zoe Trodd, quoted in "Frederick Douglass most photographed American of the 19th century..." New Haven Register, May 3, 2012)
