Historical Background
During the War of 1812, the State of Vermont furnished 4,853 infantrymen, 243 cavalrymen, and 140 artillerymen to the armies of the United States.

The small town of Vergennes in western Vermont played an outsized role in the War of 1812. During the winter of 1814, Commodore Thomas Macdonough of the U.S. Navy brought his fleet up Otter Creek to Vergennes. There, he built a small fleet of six wooden galleys, a schooner, and the 26-gun ship Saratoga at a shipyard on Otter Creek in Vergennes. The area had plentiful stands of white oak and pine, and the waterfall at Vergennes powered eight forges, two furnaces, a wire factory, a rolling mill, gristmills, and sawmills.

The fleet Macdonough assembled then successfully defeated a British fleet in the Battle of Plattsburgh Bay in September, establishing American control of Lake Champlain for the rest of the war. Simultaneously, a British invasion force of 10,000 men under the command of British Lieutenant General Sir George Prevost descended on Plattsburgh, New York, which was defended by regular troops of the U.S. Army, supplemented by New York and Vermont militia. After Commodore Macdonough defeated the British fleet in the hard-fought naval battle, Prevost abandoned the land attack and retreated to Canada, ending any British claim to the area. Together with the successful defense of Baltimore at the Battle of Baltimore over the next several days, the American victory at Plattsburgh gave American negotiators an advantage over their British counterparts, then meeting in the Netherlands to find a way to end the war. Three months later, they signed the Treaty of Ghent, which restored the status quo antebellum concerning any territorial gains.
