Partly Engraved Document Signed "M. Van Buren" as President and "J.R. Poinsett" as Secretary of War, 1 page, 13.5" x 17.5". Washington, D.C., April 1, 1839. On vellum. Creased at folds. White paper blind-embossed 1.5" diameter scalloped edge Seal of the War Office affixed at upper left with red wax. Military vignettes at top center and across lower portion. Fine condition.

Appointment of William E. Prince as "Second Lieutenant in the First Regiment of Infantry in the service of the United States: to rank as such from the first day of August eighteen hundred and thirty-eight …"

Second Lieutenant William Edgar Prince (1815-1892), a career officer from Massachusetts, served in the Second Seminole War (1838-1842), on the Northwestern frontiers (1842-1846), and was Acting Assistant Adjutant-General to General Sterling Price, in New Mexico (1848-1849). He was Brevet Captain U. S. Army, for gallant and meritorious services in the Mexican War at the Battle of Santa Cruz de Rosales, Mexico, later serving as Captain 1st U. S. Infantry (1849) and in Texas to 1859. Prince then commanded Forts Arbuckle, Cherokee Nation, and Washita, Texas. En route to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1861, he engaged against rebels in Missouri and Kansas. He was commissioned Brigadier-General of Militia. Appointed Major 3d U. S. Infantry, in November, 1861, he commanded 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac. Prince was Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel U.S. Army, for faithful and meritorious services during the war.
