Union General John McArthur Signs Postbellum Resolutions of Marengo County, AL Announcing the Abandonment of the Confederacy

A 2pp handwritten document outlining three Resolutions formulated at a public meeting of the inhabitants of Marengo County in Linden, Alabama on June 5, 1865. Inscribed overall in the hand of Secretary M.H. Smith on pale blue blue-ruled paper. Signed verso by Union Brigadier General John McArthur (1826-1906) as "JMcArthur" at Selma, Alabama on June 16, 1865. With extensive handwritten and partially printed docket sections verso. Expected folds and some discoloration along these folds. Isolated paper bleaching and a few minor closed tears. Else near fine. 8" x 12."

This circular of Resolutions was forwarded to Uniontown, Alabama; Demopolis, Alabama; Selma, Alabama; and New Orleans, Louisiana between early June 1865 and mid-July 1865, and were received and signed by at least three other military and provisional government officials.

The Resolutions read in part:

"I. Be it resolved by the Citizens of Marengo County in Mass Meeting assembled, that we recognize the fact of the overthrow of the Confederate States, and its Authority, Civil, And Military, And the Supremacy of the United States, and that we will from a sense of duty submit to the Government of its Constituted Authorities, and do all in our power to restore peace and order throughout the entire Country. And that we will discountenance and exert ourselves to Suppress any further resistance to the law thereof.

II. That we earnestly desire that the State of Alabama be restored to her former relations with the Federal Government of the United States, And that we will do all in our power to further this object, And we must respectfully request the Authorities of the United States to indicate the action to be taken to secure that object…"

McArthur was one of the most competent military leaders in the Union Army, fighting in the Western Theatre in the Battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, and Nashville. Soldiers in Brevet Major General John McArthur's brigade (called the "Highland Brigade") wore Scottish caps in homage to their Scottish-born commander.
