Reading in full:
"I take pleasure in presenting to your acquaintance Gen. J. M. Withers of Ala. The General has been an acquaintance of mine for a number of years, is a graduate of West Point, and a gentleman I highly respect. If you can facilitate attention to the business he may have it will be appreciated as a favor."

Jones M. Withers (1814-1890) graduated from West Point in 1845, ranking 44th out of 56 cadets. He served for a brief period with the 1st U.S. Dragoons but resigned his commission after one year and began a law practice in Alabama. He saw service during the Mexican-American War, and later entered local Alabama politics. During the Civil War, Withers was promoted to brigadier general and served in the Western Theater. After the war's end, he was pardoned by the U.S. government and returned to civilian life. It is unknown what business he may have required Lincoln to assist him with.
