Description:

U.S. Grant vs. S.J. Tilden Presidential Ad Blackwell's Durham Tobacco

A Blackwell's Genuine Durham Tobacco card, featuring the portraits of presidential nominees Samuel J. Tilden and Ulysses S. Grant. When folded, the image appears to be Tilden, and when unfolded the image is revealed to be Grant. Measuring 3.5" x 5.5" when unfolded, New York, undated [ca. 1875]. Creased with minor loss at the edge. Light toning throughout. With bold colors, very good.

The company has chosen to remain neutral in the election, with a poem that provides the merits of both candidates but urges customers that "though you differ in your views political, we hope you coincide when we remark, the choicest brand to smoke is Blackwell's Genuine Durham, that suits every taste no matter what, Republican or Democrat."

Leading up to the election of 1876, President Grant faced controversy for suspected corruption within his party, along with the abandonment of Reconstruction. In a public letter, Grant announced in 1875 that he would not seek a third term. The Republican party went on to nominate Ohio Governor Rutherford B. Hayes, while the Democrats nominated New York Governor, Samuel J. Tilden. The election was marred by widespread fraud, election violence, and disfranchisement of black voters. Tilden won the popular vote, but the results in the Electoral College were widely disputed and took several months to be decided. An informal compromise was finally reached, with the Democrats conceding 20 contested electoral votes to Hayes, resulting in a 185-184 victory. At the same time, the Republicans agreed to withdraw federal troops from the South, marking the end of Reconstruction.
