Description:

Grant Ulysses 1822 - 1885

U.S. Grant signature three months before dying of throat cancer.

Cream colored stock card signed by 18th U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) as "U.S. Grant" at center. Inscribed "New York, May 9th 1885" by another hand at bottom left. In near fine condition. Minor surface roughness verso indicates the card was once adhered to another support, like a scrapbook. Card measures 4.125" x 2.5".

In the spring of 1885, U.S. Grant was dying of throat cancer; indeed, he would die two and a half months after signing this card. Grant had just celebrated his 63rd birthday about two weeks earlier. The former president's well-publicized illness, as well as his straightened financial situation, prompted Congress to reinstate his army pension in the months preceding his death. Grant would finish writing his memoirs just days before dying. These memoirs, along with funeral services held across the nation, shone a light on Grant's personal character, military career, and presidential accomplishments. The lauded war veteran and Reconstruction era president was entombed in an enormous stone mausoleum in New York City on April 17, 1897, just ten days shy of what would have been his seventy-fifth birthday.
