Mexican War veteran U.S. Grant resumed military service during the Civil War. Grant distinguished himself in several Union campaigns, notably Vicksburg, and was one of 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln's (1809-1865) most competent and reliable commanders. Grant personally received General Robert E. Lee's surrender in mid-April 1865. After the Civil War, the Republican stalwart Grant implemented many of the party's Reconstruction policies. Grant eventually served two terms as President, following his controversial predecessor Andrew Johnson (1808-1875).

Grant would finish writing his memoirs just days before dying in 1885. These memoirs, along with funeral services held across the nation, shone a light on Grant’s personal character, military career, and presidential accomplishments.
