A group of prints depicting 18th U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1883), mostly in his role as Civil War general, as imagined by American painters and printmakers, ca. 1868-1897. New York City, Philadelphia, and Chicago. Artist names, titles, publishing, and copyright information is printed outside the images along the bottom edges. Please refer to catalog photos for additional information related to condition, which is overall very good. Group highlights include two hand-colored lithographs of Grant. The average size of the prints is 21" x 28."

1. Charles F. Roehsler after G.A. Binkert, "'Let Us have Peace!' Published in Commemoration of the Dedication of the Tomb of Genl. U.S. Grant, April 27th, 1897, at Riverside Park, New York City." Ca. 1897. New York, New York. The hand-colored lithograph depicts the allegorical figure of Columbia, a Civil War soldier and sailor, an oval portrait of Grant, and his tomb. Toning, edge darkening, closed tears, and bent corners, else near fine and vividly colored. 21.125" x 28."

2. John Sartain from an original daguerreotype, published by printseller William Smith, "Lieut. General U.S. Grant." N.d. but ca. ca. 1880. Philadelphia. An engraving depicting Grant standing next to a white horse on a battlefield. With toning, smudges, and scuffs, else very good. 21.5" x 28.125."

3. Thomas Sinclair published by John Smith, "Lieutenant Genl. Grant, Commander of the Armies of the United States." N.d. but ca. mid-late 19th C . Philadelphia. A hand-colored lithograph depicting Grant astride his horse Cincinnati. Uneven toning/mat burn, scattered closed tears, corner, and edge loss. Foxing verso. Else very good and vivid. 22" x 28."

4. William Edgar Marshall, untitled bust portrait of Grant wearing his military uniform. 1886. New York, New York. The engraving is pencil-signed by the artist as "Wm Edgar Marshall" at lower right. Moderate toning, soiling, and foxing, with loss and abrasions to upper edge with surface residue. 22.125" x 29.5."

5. John Sartain from an original daguerreotype, published by printseller William Smith, "Lieut. General U.S. Grant." N.d. but ca. ca. 1880. Philadelphia. An engraving depicting Grant standing next to a white horse on a battlefield. With toning, isolated water stains, and a folded upper left corner, else near fine. 21.5" x 28.25."

6. William Sartain, "Ulysses S. Grant." 1868. Philadelphia. Artist's proof engraving showing a waist-length portrait of Grant as a statesman, with Grant's facsimile signature. Light toning and scattered foxing to the print, with closed tears, edge darkening, and adhesive remnants on the mat. Hinged along the right edge. The actual size of the engraving is 18.75" x 25" while the matted size overall is 20.125" x 27.875."

7. William Edgar Marshall after William Edgar Marshall, published by Hubbard Brothers, untitled bust portrait of Grant wearing his military uniform. N.d. but ca. 1886. Philadelphia. The engraving . Moderate toning, soiling, and foxing, else good. 20.25" x 29.5."

8. Henry Gugler after John H. Littlefield, untitled bust portrait of Grant wearing his military uniform. N.d. but ca. late 19th C. Printed by Western Bank Note & Engraving Co., Chicago. The engraving shows scattered toning, flyspecking, water stains, and foxing, with a brown stain affecting the left edge. Else very good. 15" x 16.5."

9. Copyrighted 1885, New York, New York, by H.B. Hall's Sons, bust portrait of Grant featuring his facsimile signature. Toning, scattered foxing, with adhesive remnants along the right edge. Hinged along the right edge to the mat. The actual size of the print is 15.875" x 20.625" while the matted size overall is 20" x 26.625."

Unless otherwise indicated, we do our own in-house world-wide shipping!

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses that proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with a signature required option, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
