Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf Jr. (1934-2012) was a United States Army general who served in the Vietnam and Gulf War. He was highly decorated for his service in Vietnam, earning three Silver Stars, two Purple Hearts, and the Legion of Merit. During the Gulf War, he was given command of the United States Central Command, leading all coalition forces in the conflict. In the 1990s, Schwarzkopf also planned and led Operation Desert Storm, which led to the defeat and removal of Iraqi troops from Kuwait. He eventually retired from the Army in August 1991.

William Childs Westmoreland (1914- 2005) was a United States Army general who served as commander of the U. S. forces during the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1968. His strategy of fighting a war of attrition against the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army, however, was deeply unpopular to those who believed the casualties among Vietnamese citizens were too great. Westmoreland was eventually reassigned to Chief of Staff of the United States Army, a position which he held from 1968 to 1972.
