There were numerous photo opportunities on June 18, 1973 to document the historic meeting between the two world leaders. This photograph was probably taken between 11:32 am and 3:12 pm, which, according to President Nixon's Daily Diary, was when he met with Brezhnev, Soviet officials and their American counterparts, press members, and White House photographers before ambling over to the South Lawn of the White House.

Secretary Brezhnev's visit to the United States took place from June 18 - June 25, 1973. The 1973 "Washington Summit" was the second of three highly successful summits with Brezhnev conducted between 1972-1974. Nixon and Brezhnev met in Moscow in May 1972 and June 1974, and at the White House and at Nixon's Western White House in San Clemente, California in June 1973. The two principal items on the 1973 round of diplomatic talks remained to finalize the terms of SALT I (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks) and secure Most Favored Nation Status for the Soviet Union. The "Washington Summit" culminated in the signing of the "Agreement Between The United States of America and The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics on the Prevention of Nuclear War" on June 22, 1973. Nixon's and Brezhnev's series of intimate talks would result in SALT I, the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, and the Threshold Test Ban Treaty.
