Description:

Two World War II-era Bishop Appointments at two Historically Black Congregations, the CME Church & AME Church

A pair of World War II-era certificates signed by two Bishops, the first from the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church appointing a Deacon, and the second from the African Methodist Episcopal Church appointing a Deaconess.

The lot is comprised of:

1. A certificate signed by Bishop Randall A. Carter (ca. 1867-1954) of the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church (called the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church after 1954) as "Randall A. Carter" at bottom. Signed in Dallas, Texas on November 16, 1941. The partly printed and partly handwritten document has an embossed blue seal at lower right. Expected paper folds, overall toning, and chipped edges. The edges are folded back, measuring 10" x 7.75" as is. Else very good.

Bishop Randall A. Carter appointed Paul Young a Deacon in the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church, so that he could "administer the Ordinance of Baptism, Marriage and the Burial of the Dead, in the absence of an Elder, and to feed the flock of Christ…"

Randall A. Carter was the first college graduate of Paine Institute, a historically black seminary in Augusta, Georgia, where he later served as the institution's second president. Carter is one of only 63 bishops appointed in the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church since the church was established in Jackson, Tennessee in 1870 by 41 former slaves formerly of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

2. A certificate signed by Bishop David H. Simms of the African Methodist Episcopal Church as "David H. Simms" at center. Dated May 30, 1942, n.p. The partly printed and partly manuscript document is on heavy stock, with an embossed seal at lower left. Overall toning and scattered foxing. A central vertical crease. Else very good. 7.25" x 9.25."

Bishop Simms appointed Addie Ware, a member of the Charles St. Boston congregation, as a deaconess in the AME Church. The AME Church evolved from the Free Africa Society first established in Philadelphia in 1787. Membership in the AME Church increased rapidly after the Civil War. Today, it has between 2.5-3.5 million members.
