Two Handwritten Notes By Jackie Kennedy, One On "Ask Not What Your Country Can Do For You, Ask What You Can Do For Your Country" Letterhead
(2) AN

A forty word unsigned handwritten note by Jacqueline Kennedy at upper right of a typed letter signed from Albert L. Casassa as Commander of The American Legion, John F. Kennedy Memorial Post No. 287, Langley Park, Maryland, May 6, 1969. To Mrs. Aristotle Onassis. 1p, 8.5" x 11". Expected mailing folds and creases, with minor separation and a slight tear to left edge. Near fine.

Casassa asks Mrs. Onassis for her "permission to bestow upon you, an Honorary Membership to our Womans (sic) Auxiliary, to Caroline as an Honorary Member of the Jr. Auxiliary, and John Jr., as a Honorary Member of the SAL [Sons of the American Legion]. You are all eligible, because President Kennedy served in the Armed Forces during time of war..." Jackie pens a note to Dave Powers at upper right: "What do I say? OK if hurts him too much not too – but can't you say if it's named for JFK that is we feel we belong to it anyway – I guess we should let him join us you decide."

Accompanied by a similar, but unrelated, unsigned handwritten note by Jacqueline Kennedy to her personal secretary, Nancy Tuckerman, 1p, 5.75" x 3.5". Unevenly cut edges, minor creases, and some stray ink marks. Overall, near fine. In full: "Nancy - what is most tactful answer - I don't mind getting them & seeing them if it isn't imposing."

From the Estate of David F. Powers, close friend and Special Assistant to John F. Kennedy. Noted at lower right near Casassa's signature, most likely by Powers or his son, "White House Police."

As Captain of the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division, Albert L. Casassa was in charge of 250 men at the White House and 350 men at the Foreign Missions Division.
