Description:

Two George II Acts For Levying Soldiers and Exempting Quakers, 1757-58

Two printed Acts of Parliament, printed during the reign of King George II, [London], dated 1757 and 1758. Both appear to have been taken from a larger published volume, "Anno Regni Georgii II Regis, Tricesimo Primo." Includes "An Act for the speedy Levying of Soldiers for an intended Expedition" (1757) and "An Act to exempt the People called Quakers from the Penalty of the Law for Non-attendance on Military Musters" (1758). Both with light toning and foxing. Slightly rough edges. There is a tear to the lower edge of the 1758 Act which has been repaired with archival tape. Overall very good.

The two printed documents include:
Anno Regni Georgii II Regis, Tricesimo Primo, Chapter XII. 4pp, measuring 8" x 13", 1757. "An Act to exempt the People called Quakers from the Penalty of the Law for Non-attendance on Military Musters", published December 31, 1757. Outlining "Quakers imprisoned to be set at Liberty"; "Execution levied on Goods &c"; "Lists of Quakers liable to Impresses to be taken in Writing, and by whom to be certified &c"; "A Computation to be made of Quakers &c"; and "Tax levied on Quakers."

Anno Regni Georgii II Regis, Tricesimo Primo, Chapter XXIV. 4pp, measuring 7.5" x 12.5", 1758. "An Act for the speedy Levying of Soldiers for an intended Expedition", passed at Boston on May 25, 1757. Outlining a "Manner of notifying the several Companies of Militia in order to raise Volunteers"; "Fine in case of non-appearance"; "Fine for not serving when impressed"; "Residents of other Towns or Strolers liable to be impressed"; and "Any Captain or chief officer that has completed his Quota to give Notice."

George II (1683-1760) was king of Great Britain and Ireland, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg and a prince-elector of the Holy Roman Empire from 11 June 1727 until his death in 1760. During his long reign, the system of governing Britain through an oligarchy of powerful political managers solidified.
