The lot includes two rare publications by George Whitefield (also Whitfield) (1714-1770), an influential voice in the British Methodist movement. The two publications - which include a book of sermons and a pamphlet recounting details from Whitefield's journal - date around the first time Whitefield traveled to British North America, where he would become one of the most preeminent clerics of the First Great Awakening (1730s-1740s).

With a handsome frontispiece engraving showing Whitefield with crossed eyes testifying to the intensity of his religious concentration. The front loose endpaper is signed "Miss Church's," while the back pastedown paper is signed "Elizabeth." The sumptuous original leather covers have been expertly merged with a replacement spine. Expected wear within including toning, foxing, and chipped edges. The nine Sermons plus "A Collection of Forms of Prayer for Every Day of the Week" number approximately 270pp total. 4.675" x 7.125" x 1.25." 12mo.

2. A copy of George Whitefield, "Continuation Of the Reverend Mr. Whitefield's Journal, During the Time he was Detained in England by the Embargo" (London: Printed by W. Strahan, and sold by James Hutton, at the Biole and Sun, without Temple Bar, 1739). Neatly rebound with one quarter lavender binding, gently sunned.
