Two Colorful Jack Dempsey Signed Postcards Commemorating 1919 World Heavyweight Dempsey-Willard Boxing Bout
Signed postcards
Two vintage postcards depicting the July 4, 1919 world heavyweight boxing championship match between Jack Dempsey and Jess Willard, each postcard boldly signed and inscribed by champion Jack Dempsey (1895-1983) verso. N.d., n.p. The first postcard, which is matte finish, is inscribed and signed: "To Lou / Good Luck Pal / Jack Dempsey." The second glossy postcard is inscribed and signed: "To Joseph Pelletier / Thank you / & lots of Luck Pal / Jack Dempsey." Light expected wear, else near fine. Each postcard measures approximately 5.375" x 3.375."

The postcard cover art shows a detail from James Montgomery Flagg's original 1944 monumental oil on canvas depicting the Dempsey-Willard fight. The printed text verso relates to Jack Dempsey's Broadway Restaurant and Bar, located on Broadway between 49th and 50th Streets, which operated between 1925-1974.

On July 4, 1919, Jess Willard and Jack Dempsey faced off in a temporary boxing arena in Toledo, Ohio for a 12-round prizefight that would determine the world heavyweight championship. Willard, who was defending his 1915 world heavyweight championship title, was more than 10 years older than Dempsey and about 60 lbs. heavier. Dempsey knocked out Willard in the third round, and "Kid Blackie" would hold the world heavyweight championship title until 1926. One of the most popular boxers of the 1920s, Dempsey's reputation only grew after his September 1927 match-up with arch rival Gene Tunney, called the Long Count Fight.
