Description:

Abraham Lincoln
New York, NY and Philadelphia, PA, ca. 1860
Two Anti and One Pro-Lincoln 1860 Presidential Campaign Pamphlets
Pamphlet/Booklet

Three 1860 presidential election pamphlets printed during the final weeks of the campaign. All focused on the candidacy of Abraham Lincoln and the most explosive political issue in the United States at the time: the expansion of slavery and the future of the Union. Each pamphlet is accompanied by a manila envelope with typed identification by Americana dealer Forest H. Sweet. Pamphlets were previously bound and remain in excellent condition with lightly toned pages and occasional foxing. Scarce printings intent on making the final arguments near the end of a grueling election season!

Includes:

"Address of the Union Electoral Committee to the Union Men of New York." Printed circa September 1860. 8vo. 8 pages. Published by the State Executive Committee of the National Union Party and including an excerpt from a speech of Hiram Ketchum given on September 4, 1860. The pamphlet supports the election of John Bell and Edward Everett and insists that the continued harmony of the Union is more important than the question of "slavery in those territorial possessions which are not yet sufficiently populous to be admitted as States." With a sheet of Sweet's stationery listing the item.

"Address of Ex-Gov. Hunt in Defence of the Union Electoral Ticket." Campaign pamphlet printed shortly after the address was delivered on October 30, 1860. 8vo. 8 pages. Published by the State Executive Committee of the National Union Party. Begins with a description of the gathering and reports on Washington Hunt's address. Hunt throws his support fully behind ensuring that the electors of the state unite for the purpose of defeating Lincoln: "There are questions upon which you and I differ in opinion from Mr. Douglas, but there can be no doubt that a large majority of the respective friends of Bell and Douglas would prefer the choice of either to the election of Lincoln, for the reason that they would consider it more favorable for the safety, repose and prosperity of the whole country." (Page 4.)

"Speech of Hon. Charles Gibbons, Delivered at National Hall, Philadelphia, October 5th, 1860, In Reply to the Speech of the Hon. W. B. Reed…and in Vindication of the People's Party." Philadelphia: King & Baird, Printers. 1860. 8vo. 30 pages, with printed top wrapper. A pro-Lincoln, anti-Democratic defense of Pennsylvania's People's Party, framed as a rebuttal to W. B. Reed. He argues that Reed is siding with Southern pro-slavery demands, that the real issue is the extension of slavery into the territories. He proposes that electing Lincoln does not threaten the Union; rather, the threat comes from those who menace disunion if Lincoln wins: "That Mr. Lincoln will maintain the Pennsylvania doctrine of 1780, on the subject of slavery extension, I have no earthly doubt. That he will be influenced in the administration of the government by fanatical men, who set the laws of their country at defiance, either in the North or the South, no man has any reason to believe." (Page 20.)

The most recent online record is from 1944 for the ""Speech of Hon. Charles Gibbons"; and there are no auction or sales records for the two State Executive Committee of the National Union Party printings.
