"Abbie an' Slats" ran from July 12, 1937, to January 30, 1971. Al Cap had already seen success with his strip "Li'l Abner" and enlisted the help of Van Buren to illustrate the comic. The strip was circulated to 400 newspapers but never reached the wide success of "Li'l Abner". The story follows city-smart Slats, who moved from New York after being orphaned to live with his cousin, spinster Abigail "Abbie" Scrapple. "Li'l Abner" starred a fictional group of hillbilies who lived in the poor mountain town of Dogpatch.
