Erle Stanley Gardner (1889-1970) was a best-selling American author of the twentieth century, writing a prodigious number of books, including more than eighty Perry Mason detective novels. Both Harry Truman and Bess Truman loved to read mysteries, and Gardner regularly sent autographed copies of his books to the Trumans as they came out.

Leonard Lyons (1906-1976) was born in New York City as Leonard Sucher into a large family of Jewish immigrants from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was in the first class of graduates from St. John's University School of Law. He gained admission to the bar in New York in 1929 and practiced law for five years. He also began writing a weekly column for the Jewish Daily Forward. He later became a Broadway columnist for the New York Post, and an editor gave him the alternative last name of Lyons for professional use. He wrote six columns per week for his "The Lyons Den," a name devised by Walter Winchell. The column began in 1934 and became a New York institution that was syndicated nationally. He wrote his last column in May 1974 on the fortieth anniversary of his first.
