"In Cold Blood" is a non-fiction novel detailing the 1959 Clutter family murders in the small farming community of Holcomb, Kansas. In the early morning hours of November 15, 1959, four members of the Clutter family- Herb, his wife, Bonnie, and their teenage children Nancy and Kenyon- were murdered in their home. The killers, Richard Hickock and Perry Smith, were arrested six weeks after the event took place and later executed by the state of Kansas. Capote learned of the quadruple murder before the killers were captured, whereupon he traveled to Kansas to write about the crime. He was accompanied by his childhood friend and fellow author Harper Lee, and they interviewed residents and investigators assigned to the case, taking thousands of pages of notes. Capote ultimately spent six years working on the book.
