Richard Graham, 1st Viscount Preston PC (1648-1695) was an English diplomat and politician who sat in the House of Commons for two periods between 1675 and 1689. He became a Jacobite conspirator, but his reputation in the Jacobite community suffered when he gave evidence against his co-conspirators in exchange for a pardon. On January 1, 1691, Preston was arrested for high treason and sentenced to death, He pleaded that as a peer of England, he was not within the jurisdiction of the court, but his plea was overruled, and he was found guilty, and condemned to death two days afterwards. His estate and title of baronet were forfeited to the crown. Preston was pardoned and freed on June 13, 1691, but in August 1691, he was again imprisoned.

Jacobitism was a series of political movements which supported the restoration of the exiled house of Stuart after James II had been ousted from the throne at the Glorious Revolution in 1688. When James went into exile, the Parliament of England argued that he had abandoned the English throne, which they offered to his Protestant daughter Mary II of England, and her husband William III. The political importance of the Jacobite movement extended from 1688 until at least the 1750s. Jacobitism had a religious, as well as a political, dimension. James II and his son and grandsons were Catholics, whose refusal to convert to Protestantism made their restoration virtually impossible other than by armed invasion. However, most of their supporters were protestants, and a great many were non‐jurors, who had refused the oaths of loyalty to William and Mary, and consequently had lost their secular or religious offices.
