Description:

Travel Journal & Post-Civil War Photos from Ex-Confederate Soldier- Includes Depictions of Former Slave

A travel journal & accompanying photos from an ex-Confederate soldier, spanning between Ca. 1895 to Ca. 1905. Includes:

1. Journal, 26pp, measuring 5" x 7.75", Ca. 1895, n.p. The first entry begins on Saturday, July 6th, 1895 at a harbor in New York in which the diarist, referred to in a notation from another hand as "Uncle Jack", embarks on an overseas voyage with several men he served with in the Civil War. Other entries include sightseeing in England, France, and Switzerland. Such places written about include Mount Rosa, a mountain range between Switzerland and Italy, and the Louvre. The last date that is mentioned is Saturday- possibly November- the 23rd. Exposed but sound binding, with expected wear to cover and toned pages. Fine condition.

2. Related photographs, all measuring 4" x 4.875", Ca. 1905, Appomattox, VA. A group of four pictures depicting Civil War veterans posing in front of the North Carolina Monument at Appomattox, as well as several other commemorative spots. Among those pictured are "Uncle Jack" and an unidentified African American man. One photo in particular shows the man, presumably a former slave, sitting solemnly in front of a ball and chain. This image works to effectively symbolize, if not demonstrate, the treatment of enslaved persons following the Civil War. Creasing, toning, and minor silvering to all, but does not affect overall image quality. Small notation present to one, pointing out "Uncle Jack" with an arrow. An overall unique pairing for the time period.

The North Carolina Monument, "Last At Appomattox", was erected in 1905 by several Confederate veterans under the authority of the General Assembly of North Carolina, and reads in part: "At this place the North Carolina Brigade of Brigadier-General W.R. Cox of Grimes Division fired The Last Volley 9 April 1865…".
