Description:

Gotti, John (1940-2002) John Gotti, in his typical Godfather bravado, talks about the throat cancer that would eventually be the only thing that could bring him down "I started six weeks of radiation this past Monday, and though its no picnic I feel like a lion, and a young lion at that"

Autograph Letter Signed, "John," 2 pages, 8.5" x 11", [Springfield, Missouri, November 27, 1998] to Barbara DeCicco, the daughter of Gregory "Big Georgie" DeCicco, a longtime capo in the Gambino crime family, concerning a variety of matters, including his recent operation to treat his throat cancer. Expected folds, else very fine.

"...I wasn't allowed to send nor receive any mail for five weeks - and then after the surgery I wasn't physically able to write - excuse my poor handwriting as I still don't have full use of my right arm. I will in a week or two. during the surgery the doctors couldn't avoid severing some nerves in my shoulder. In any event, the surgery went well - even though for five weeks I had more tubes in me that an old T.V. - I started six weeks of radiation this past Monday, and though its no picnic I feel like a lion, and a young lion at that. As for my family, other than a scare from my daughter Vicki - She was hospitalized with a clot near her heart, she is doing fine now. They are all fine and strong. I still don't have much communication... as these beauties have me under twenty four hour lock down and just two calls each month.... yesterday was Thanksgiving. I hope you all had a great day and dinner. Barbara, before I forget tell Georgie they didn't bring my property with me from Marion so I don't have my address book, I don't want folks to think they're forgotten especially this time of year..."

Gotti's operation for throat cancer in September 1998 proved successful. Unfortunately for him, the cancer reemerged two years later and he died in 2002.
