Tom Wolfe TLS Re: "The Bonfire of the Vanities" Versions

1p TLS on "Tom Wolfe, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 19 Union Square West, New York, New York, 10003" letterhead signed by American author Tom Wolfe (born 1931) as "With best wishes, Tom Wolfe" at center, and hand-addressed "Dear Mr. Pape" at top. Wolfe has also made a small revision to the text in pen. In near fine condition, with expected paper folds and a faint reverse ink impression at bottom. The cream watermarked sheet measures 8.5" x 11".

Wolfe congratulated his correspondent for noting differences between copies of his 1987 bestseller The Bonfire of the Vanities. "You have a good eye. The excerpt is indeed different … This shows how late in the game I was still making changes in The Bonfire of the Vanities. As a matter of fact, I was still making changes and driving everyone at Farrar, Straus & Giroux crazy in August of 1987 …"

Wolfe's first novel The Bonfire of the Vanities was published in 1987, although it had previously appeared in 27 installments in Rolling Stone from 1984. As he alludes to in this letter, Wolfe heavily revised the work between its serialization and its publication in book form. The finished product was well-received by both critics and popular audiences, who enjoyed Wolfe's merciless characterization of Wall Street types and 1980s New York culture.

Tom Wolfe started his writing career as a journalist, and this experience greatly influenced his subsequent novel writing. Wolfe created the style now known as New Journalism, which combined objectivity and literary license.
