Civil War-date Manuscript Letter Signed "G.W.M. Nutt Known as Com Nutt / Manchester N.H.," 1p, 4" x 5.75". New York, December 30, 1862. On lined paper blind embossed in upper left with pictorial patriotic "Union and Constitution" eagle and shield seal, bordered in red at top edge and blue at right edge. Darkened mid-horizontal fold not touching text or signature. Blank integral leaf. Fine condition.

To Miss Tompson. In full, "I Received your letter Saing you Wished my Autograph. So I will Oblige you in Sending It. Respectly Friend. G.W.M. Nutt Known as Com Nutt Manchester, N.H." Nutt (1844-1881) was born and is buried in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Accompanied by an unsigned carte-de-visite photograph, 1863/1864, 2" x 3.5" image on 2.5" x 4" photographer's mount. Albumin print captioned "Commodore Nutt and Miss Minnie Warren / as Groomsman & Bridesmaid." Photographer's imprint on verso: "Published by / E & H.T. Anthony / 501 Broadway, New York. / From / Photographic Negative / By / Brady." Lightly soiled.

This photograph was taken by Mathew Brady. It depicts Commodore Nutt and Minnie Warren as Groomsman and Bridesmaid for the wedding In New York on February 10, 1863, of Tom Thumb and Lavinia Warren, Minnie's sister. While admission to the actual wedding was free, P.T. Barnum sold tickets to the reception for $75 each to the first five thousand to apply.
