Description:

Tom Stafford Signed NASA Apollo 10 Mission Report

A NASA Apollo 10 Mission Report signed by American astronaut Thomas P. Stafford (born 1930), as "Tom Stafford" at the bottom of the front cover. The printed booklet was published ca. June 17, 1969. Triple hole punched along the left margin, with the outermost holes are reinforced with transparent plastic hole protectors. Isolated edge darkening, else clean and crisp. 12pp. 7.875" x 10.25."

This booklet was issued during the 2-month time period between the Apollo 10 space mission, which took place from May 18 - 26, 1969; and the Apollo 11 space mission, which landed the first humans on the moon on July 20, 1969. The booklet is copiously illustrated with nineteen black and white photographs. It provides a detailed summary of Apollo 10 space mission accomplishments, emphasizing that the last pre-landing mission was instrumental in laying the groundwork for future success. In part: "In swooping low over the moon and then executing a complicated set of orbital maneuvers to rejoin the mother ship, the L[unar] M[odule] did everything required for a lunar landing except the actual landing itself. The LM demonstrated convincingly its operating capabilities in cislunar space and validated the two propulsion systems in the moon's environment. These are vital to the lunar landing missions…"

The Apollo 10 space mission was crewed by Commander Thomas P. Stafford, Command Module Pilot John W. Young (1930-2018), and Lunar Module Pilot Eugene A. Cernan (1934-2017). Apollo 10 did not receive any of the glory of the Apollo 11 mission, but it was acknowledged, even at the time, as serving as the all-important "dress rehearsal." The 3-person Apollo 10 crew proved beyond a doubt that the moon landing could proceed by successfully dispatching the lunar module to the descent point over the moon.

After Apollo 10, Tom Stafford returned to space for the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, a joint U.S./Soviet space mission which launched in mid-July 1975. The joint mission, comprised of two Soviet cosmonauts (Commander Alexey Leonov and Flight Engineer Valeri Kubasov) and three American astronauts (including Stafford, Command Module Pilot Vance D. Brand, and Docking Module Pilot Donald "Deke" Slayton) entailed docking an Apollo spacecraft to the Soyuz 19. The mixed crew conducted scientific experiments together, like blocking the Sun with one spacecraft while the other photographed the solar corona. The extremely successful Apollo-Soyuz Test Project set the stage for future collaboration, including today's International Space Station.
