"Tokyo Rose" 1956 Press Photo After Her Release, Boldly Signed
Signed photograph
A fine vintage AP Wirephoto measuring 8" x 10" b/w and showing Iva Toguri D'Aquino before a microphone in 1956. Boldly signed in green ink across the image and adding her name in Japanese characters. A moderate vertical crease at middle of image and some negligible wrinkling on recto; verso exhibits period pen notations and an API stamp. Overall very good.

The legend at the bottom of the photo reads: "…Alderson, W. VA Jan 28 [n.y. but docketed 1956 on the verso] -- BACK ON THE AIR -- Mrs. Iva (Tokyo Rose) Toguri D'Aquino talks into a micraphone [sic] after her release from the Federal Women's Reformatory today. Rose received 4 yrs of her 10 year sentence for good behavior."

Iva Toguri D'Aquino (1916-2006) also known as "Tokyo Rose," was a Japanese-born American radio broadcaster of Japanese propaganda during World War II. Stranded in Japan just after the attack on Pearl Harbor when she went home to tend to a sick relative, Toguri, along with many other groups of women, was enlisted for propagandist purposes, broadcasting to American soldiers that they should surrender and return home to their wives, lovers and families. Toguri was just one woman within a larger network of "spies " -- and she actually broadcast under the name "Orphan Ann," but was accused of being the "real" Tokyo Rose when she attempted to return home. Toguri was sentenced to ten years in jail for treason, and was pardoned by President Gerald Ford in 1977.
