Description:

Tintype Picture Card of Stonewall Jackson, Days Before His Death. An Extraordinary Rarity!

A tintype picture card of Stonewall Jackson, taken just days before his death at the Battle of Chancellorsville. The card measures 2.5" x 4", N.p., ca. 1863. With "T. J. J." written in pencil in an unknown hand on the card above Jackson's image. On verso is a handwritten caption, identifying Jackson. Known as the "Chancellorsville Portrait", this photograph was taken less than a week before the Battle of Chancellorsville, where Jackson was mortally wounded. The original photographer, from the Richmond studio of Minnis and Crowell, convinced the camera-shy general to pose for a portrait. Suspended in a glass frame, which is then matted and framed to the overall size of 11.75" x 14". Light toning and soiling to the card. Bumped corners and light wear. An ink stain is present on verso. Overall very good.

It was during his wife's visit to Spotsylvania County that Jackson sat for his second of two wartime photographs. A photographer from the Richmond firm of Minnis and Crowell had come to camp but was warned that Jackson would never be persuaded to sit for a picture. As a result, the keen photographer resorted to a bit of trickery. He called upon Jackson and told him that he had been sent from Richmond to get Lee's photograph, but that the army commander had declined unless General Jackson had his picture taken first. Jackson, who had always been averse to getting his photograph, finally conceded after some urging from his wife and his belief that the Southern people should not be deprived of a photograph of the beloved General Lee. Thus General Jackson's image was captured, in what would be his final photograph before his death.

On the second day of the Battle of Chancellorsville, May 2, 1863, the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia led a devastating attack against the vulnerable right flank of the Union Army of the Potomac. The southern assault overwhelmed the unsuspecting Union XI Corps and drove it nearly three miles before the Federals managed to form a defensive position in the densely wooded region south of the Rapidan River known as the "Wilderness." A little after 9 p.m. General Jackson, who was anxious to continue the attack, rode ahead of the still-forming main Confederate line with members of his staff to assess the situation. In the darkness of the woods, southern infantrymen mistook the group for Union cavalry and fired a volley into the mounted men. Three bullets struck Jackson - one lodged in Jackson's right palm and two struck his left arm. Jackson lost his left arm and ultimately succumbed to his wounds one week later on May 10, 1863. Upon hearing of Jackson's death, Robert E. Lee is reported as having said "I have lost my right arm", and "I'm bleeding at the heart."
