Description:

Pickering Timothy

1p receipt written in the third person and inscribed overall by Massachusetts statesman Timothy Pickering (1745-1829), including his signature as "Timothy Pickering" at top. Minor loss to the "h" of "Timothy". In very good condition, with expert restoration. Some mounting traces verso. 7.75" x 6". Countersigned by money recipient William Wood at center right.

Receipt No. 596 dated March 6, 1783 recorded that Timothy Pickering and another debtor D. Wolfe had paid their debt of "Two dollars and sixty two ninetieths infull [sic] for eighty six bundles Straw" to vendor William Wood.

It is unclear what unit of currency Pickering used, as Massachusetts used its own scale of pounds, shillings, and pence in both specie and paper bills until transitioning to the U.S. dollar in 1793. While the U.S. dollar was declared the official currency by the Continental Congress as early as 1785, other forms of payment were long accepted. Accepting foreign currency from England, Spain, Portugal, and France were not uncommon, as was accepting payment in the form of commodities or service.

Timothy Pickering, a Massachusetts trained lawyer and politician, also served as a militiaman, Adjutant General, and Quartermaster General in the Continental Army.  Pickering acted as 3rd U.S. Secretary of State under both the Washington and Adams administrations. Afterwards, he represented Massachusetts in the Senate and House of Representatives. Pickering advocated for New England secession during the War of 1812 and helped organize the Hartford Convention.
