Taney Roger 1777 - 1864 Three times signed Robert B. Taney legal document
ADS on laid paper, signed three times by Roger B Taney, once along the bottom of the motion as "R.B. Taney as Attorney for the Plaintiff", once in the body of the document as "R.B. Taney", and once on the verso in the docket as "R.B. Taney", 8" x 13" with small chips along outer edges and separation along folds now expertly repaired. Overall slightly toned with faint handling marks and soiling. Expected folds.

A wonderful legal document covering a å£100 assault case on behalf of the plaintiff Stewart Ansley against Robert Heans written and signed by Robert Brooke Taney in three locations.

As written in full:"And whereupon the said Ansley by R.B. Taney his attorney complains that the said John on the fourth day of July in the year eighteen hundred and four at Frederick County aforesaid with force and arms that is to say with swords clubs sticks knives and fists, made an assault on him the said Ansley and he did thus and there beat wound and evilly treat so that his life was greatly despaired of, and other enormities to him the said Ansely then and there and to the great damage of him the said Ansley and against the power government and dignity of the state of Maryland and soforth to herefore the said Ansley saith that he is injured and hath damage to the value of one hundred pounds current money and therefore he brings suit and so forth"

A fascinating document from early in Taney's legal career prior to becoming Attorney General and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The top margin of the pages states "Frederick County to wit", the location where he began his legal career in earnest. Taney was elected to the Maryland State Senate in 1816, serving until 1821. When the 1824 presidential election divided the party between supporters and opponents of Andrew Jackson, Taney became a staunch Jacksonian Democrat ultimately accepting President Jackson's nomination as Attorney General of the United States and in 1936 became the fifth Chief Justice of the Supreme court.
