Description:

McKean Thomas

McKean, Thomas; Alexander Dallas; Jared Ingersoll, et al.

Circular. Philadelphia, August 3d, 1792 [caption title]. Signed in manuscript. Philadelphia, 1792. Broadside, 8¼” x 13¼”. Light toning, minor wear, small edge tears repaired with tape on verso. Very good.

Printed circular addressed to Gen. Edward Hand of Lancaster County, asking for names of men who are “characters proper to be nominated as Representatives in Congress, and Electors of a President and Vice President of the United States.”  This is, essentially, a call for Lancaster County to submit its members for the Electoral College, though that term didn’t come into use until the early 19th century.  That assembly would go on to elect George Washington to a second term at the presidency.

The circular is signed by six Pennsylvania officials: Thomas McKean, James Hutchinson, John Barclay, Alexander Dallas, Hilary Baker, and Jared Ingersoll. Thomas McKean (1734-1817) was a Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Delaware, who also signed the Articles of Confederation. James Hutchinson (1752-1793) was Surgeon General of Pennsylvania and an anti-Federalist who lost his life in the yellow fever epidemic of 1793. John Barclay (1749-1824) was Mayor of Philadelphia at the time of signing the present document. Alexander Dallas (1759-1817) was a statesman who served as the first Reporter of Decision of the Supreme Court; he later served as both Secretary of the Treasury and Secretary of War. Hilary baker (1746-1798) was an Alderman for Philadelphia at the time this document was signed; he subsequently served as the city’s mayor, and died in the yellow fever epidemic of 1798. And Jared Ingersoll (1749-1822) was a Pennsylvania signer of the Constitution who served as the state’s Attorney General.

A rare early American imprint signed by six notable Philadelphians, including a Signer of the Declaration of Independence.
