Moderate to severe foxing within. The full title page of the first volume is discretely trimmed at top. Else good to very good. Each volume measures about 5.25" x 8.375" x 1."

Thomas Jefferson's grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph had edited Thomas Jefferson's writings and published them in a four-volume set in the United States four years before as "Memoir, Correspondence, and Miscellanies, from the Papers of Thomas Jefferson" (Charlottesville, VA: F. Carr and Co., 1829). The French editors of the work kept Jefferson's papers intact, focusing on translation instead of abridgment.

French attitudes towards Thomas Jefferson were largely shaped by his close association with the American Revolution and as the author of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson served as the U.S. Minister to France during the lead up to the French Revolution, from 1785-1789. Ideologically, Jefferson was 100% committed to the idea of a revolution in any context, and he became one of the most zealous proselytizers of political restructuring. As he wrote to a friend, Jefferson imagined the "ball of liberty…roll[ing] round the world" in Russia, Poland, Greece, and South America. Jefferson advised the Marquis de Lafayette on the composition of La Déclaration des Droits de L'Homme et du Citoyen (1789), and allowed revolutionary meetings to convene at his Paris residence. A Francophile, Jefferson was greatly influenced by his time and study abroad.
