Thomas H. Benton ALS on Support of Jackson During the Bank War
ALS
An autograph letter signed by U.S. Senator Thomas Hart "Old Bullion" Benton. 4pp of a bifolium, measuring 7.5" x 9.5", Harrisburg, dated November 23, 1835. The letter is signed "Thomas H. Benton" and addressed to a group of Andrew Jackson supporters, in which Benton discusses his role during the Jackson administration and the "Bank War". With flattened mail folds, toning, and light soiling. Small tears and separations at the fold edges. Bumping and wear to the corners. Boldly signed.

In part:
"You have been pleased to refer, with expressions of too much honor, to the part which I have acted in the difficult and perilous scenes through which the administration of President Jackson has had to pass, and while I cannot but be proud to see my own labors so much appreciated, & even overrated, I must take leave to report what I have often said before, that the perils of these times would have been fatal to the Republic had it not been for one Man who stood in front of the stern, and the body of the People who stood at this back. He and they, have saved the Republic and prevented the Bank of the United States from doing now what Mr. Jefferson predicted twenty years ago that it would undertake to do, namely, to seize upon a critical period in the affairs of the country, to unhinge the confidence of the people in their public functionaries, upset the government, and put an end to the form as well as the substance of the constitution. This is what the Bank has now attempted to do, and has been prevented from doing; and if in the multitude of those who have nobly sustained the President in this arduous contest, I could presume to name one above all others, it would be the patriotic Governor of your own State, whose wise and energetic message to the General Assembly of Pennsylvania, at the most gloomy and desponding period of the Panic Session, developed the true position of Pennsylvania democracy, and showed that it was equally inaccessible to the impressions of terror & to the seduction of interest…"

Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858) was an attorney and longtime United States Senator from Missouri. Benton served as an aide to General Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812 and served in the Senate from 1821 to 1851, becoming the first member of that body to serve five terms. He worked as an important ally of President Jackson and President Martin Van Buren, particularly with his support of Jackson during the Bank War over the issue of rechartering the Second Bank of the U.S.
