Thomas Edison Responds to Inquiry re: Scientific Advancements of the Next 50 Years
LS

An autograph letter addressed to Thomas Edison from one R. L. Thompson in which he asks whether science will continue to advance at a similar pace over the next fifty years. 2pp of a bifolium, measuring 5" x 7.75", Northampton, England, February 15, 1904. The inventor's response, penned in the upper left of the first page states simply: "Yes, Edison." Exhibits light edge toning throughout, with isolated dampstaining to upper right. Small closed tear present near lower right edge. Expected folds and handling creases. Overall, very good- an exciting example!

Thompson's letter reads in full:

"I am advised I might as well save my time, stamp & paper as to write to you, but I am reserving my own opinion for a few weeks.
Fact is, I want the opinion of the man who knows as to whether he thinks it possible for the next 50 years to bring forth such scientific revolutions as last few years have produced? I could write a long letter on the matter but that is the point & as I like many others am a busy man I leave it at that.
Sincerest best wishes from a stranger, but an admirer;
Yours respectfully,
R. L. Thompson"

From 1900 to 1904, the world was introduced to numerous inventions and significant quality of life advancements that would, as Thompson suggested, revolutionize the field of science. Among these new luxuries included air conditioning, escalators, radio receivers, tungsten light bulbs, and the zeppelin airship.

Thomas Edison and his Manufacturing Company served as a spearhead of advancement during this time, having illuminated the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. Indeed, just months after this letter was dated, Edison would be named an Honorable Consulting Engineer to the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition. His brief response to Thompson's inquiry seems to suggest that while yes, technology will continue to advance at a stable pace, those involved in its advancement prefer not to speculate.
