Program Cover Signed "Thos A Edison," 8.5" x 11", 1 page. West Orange, New Jersey, October 20, 1928. Bold, dark signature, his "umbrella signature" which he turned into an enormous 4" x .5" oval! Three looseleaf holes at blank left edge. The cover has a printed 3" x 3" image of the Edison Gold Medal affixed and text "Presentation / of the / Congressional Medal / for / Scientific Achievement / to / Thomas Alva Edison / October Twenty / 1928 / at the Edison Laboratory, West Orange, N.J." Very lightly soiled. Fine condition.
On May 21, 1928, the House of Representatives voted to approve H.J. Res. 243, awarding inventor Thomas A. Edison a Congressional Gold Medal. President Calvin Coolidge signed the legislation on May 29, 1928. Secretary of the Treasury Andrew W. Mellon awarded Edison the gold medal on October 20, 1928, in his laboratory in West Orange, New Jersey. President Coolidge spoke via a radio link from the White House. Nearly 50 radio stations broadcasted the ceremony.
